By Troy WattsBamfield’s Canadian Coast Guard station has had a slower season this summer. Capt. Garry Deis officer in charge in Bamfield said the station has responded to 77 calls so far this year compared to 87 calls by this measure measure year.“There’s neither rhyme nor reason for it,” said Deis. “Sometimes you will go days without anything and then suddenly you get four or five calls in one day.”He said no one in his station knows why it is so unpredictable.“We all undergo different competing theories for why that happens,’ said Deis. He said the defy may have been a factor for the slow season.“Last year there was better weather and we had more people out on the water.”However. Deis said the Bamfield displace is prepared for a busy long pass “We expect it to be high and we alter for it but sometimes nothing ordain come about.”Capt. Aaron Twa air coordinator for the Joint Rescue Coordination displace in Victoria said the Bamfield displace has experienced a slow season but overall the toughen has not been much different than previous years. He said the Bamfield displace was very work outside the summer toughen. “They’ve had a busy spring and a hellish winter,” said Twa. The JRCC covers B. C and the Yukon Territory and is the busiest in Canada. Twa said the displace responded to 3,017 calls so far this year including 240 incidences on the West Coast and 2,100 on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. Capt. Cheryl Condly public affairs officer for 19 Wing in Comox said this season has not been much different from previous years as well.“We’ve had 177 missions so far this year which is basically where we were at the same measure last year,” said Condly. She said last year. 19 go had a total of 224 missions including 40 medical evacuations and 23 rescue operations. She said this year 19 Wing has flown an unusually high number of rescue operations – 42 missions almost double than last year.“I guess it just depends on what people are doing where and when and the weather conditions,” said Condly.
