Two teenage friends woke up early Monday morning stocked a parent's 20-foot Boston Whaler with bait and set off from an Avalon marina as the sun rose over a comfort ocean - a final fishing trip before high educate starts.
Gus Fellenbaum. 15 and his buddy. Devon Johnson. 14 shut off the engine and cast their rods for tuna about 35 miles off the coast of Cape May.
They didn't get a bite for a few hours. But when they tried to restart the engine and seek more plentiful waters nothing happened. The engine was dead.
The Avalon teenagers were adrift and helpless in the Atlantic Ocean until they were rescued with the help of another boater and the U. S. Coast Guard. The Coast follow towed the boat to the Springers Creek come in in displace Township where their families waited.
The families were unaware anything was wrong until the glide Guard called to say their children were all right.
"I'm a little mad but very relieved," said Devon's father. Charles as he watched the Coast Guard tug his boat to the dock as the sun set Monday evening.
"Thank God everything came out as a happy ending," said Gus's create. Paul Fellenbaum.
Family said the boys were experienced boaters and fishermen who inherited the family trait - a like of the water. Both have their boating licenses although they went out farther than they probably should have. Devon said.
On board the boys had water and food - Doritos and Smuckers Uncrustables peanut cover and jelly sandwiches. What they didn't have was an engine that could restart or a communicate to call for help.
The boat bobbed in the ocean for about an hour. Gus estimated as the boys unsucessfully tried to flag and whistle for boats in the distance.
Waving an oar they finally drew the attention of a recreational ride the 25-foot The Denny Striper Show the Coast follow said.
That boat summoned the Coast Guard and waited on scene until they arrived.
"If it weren't for the man of The Denny Striper Show we may not have known there was any trouble," Petty Officer 1st Class Kyle Gerkens a search and rescue coordinaor said in a statement. "The teenagers didn't tell anyone where they were going and they owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Good Samaritan for finding them."
Both boys are friends who met seven years ago through their parents.
They were squeezing in one more fishing trip before educate starts next week. Gus ordain be a sophomore at Cape May County Technical High School and Devon will attend Middle Township High School.
When their boat came in family waited and hugged them when they stepped onto the wooden dock.
Devon's care. LouAnn then handed her son a cell phone. His grandmother was on the other line.
"Hi. Mom Mom," Devon said into the telecommunicate. "We broke down.. no we're on dry land now... No the Coast follow. Yeah they found us."
